About

Dr. Stuart Turner

Leafpath Informatics is my Biomedical Informatics consulting agency based in Northern California.

I am formally trained clinically as a veterinarian (University of California, Davis) and informaticist. I practiced primarily companion animal emergency and critical-care medicine full-time in Northern California (from Sacramento to Marin) for approximately 13 years. In addition to studying physiology, chemistry and veterinary medicine, I pursed a parallel interest in computer science and knowledge engineering while in school. As a clinician, this natural interest in resolving challenges regarding the improvement of patient care and outcomes was met with parallel work in biomedical informatics starting in the early 1990’s.

After completing a post-doc in biomedical informatics (University of California, Davis), I began teaching and expanding my activities in both veterinary and human informatics. I now practice as a health-care knowledge engineer full-time.

I’ve been an academic graduate lecturer (decision-support systems/artificial intelligence in medicine, electronic health records and research seminars) and principal investigator on large scale projects (e.g. biosurveillance).

My consultancy provides biomedical informatics support to a number of national public research projects and data sharing initiatives as well as commercial endeavors (e.g. National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute). My current work is in the realms of grid computing, semantic interoperability, development of biomedical ontologies, service-oriented architecture, federated health information exchanges, open standards and open source development, and the integration of decision support tools into clinical information systems (including health records).
